Bevvy are thrilled to announce our latest ballot in partnership with Woven Whisky Makers. The Leith-based blender have chosen to release their latest expression - Experience N.19 Thrice - exclusively through the Bevvy app.
Woven were founded by three friends driven by the shared goal of exploring beyond the limits of what is expected from blended whisky. From their blending studio in Edinburgh they utilise whisky from all over the world to craft their highly regarded, small batch blends.
Of the collaboration, Bevvy co-founder Laurie Black said: “When Bevvy first approached Woven, I’d tried a few of their blends and thought they had a cool vibe. It’s only been the last few months where we’ve been working a bit closer that I’ve realised how much genuine synergy and overlap we have. We both think the same way and want the same things. We are both passionate about making whisky a much more inviting and engaging category.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be the exclusive partner of Thrice. For me, it’s an amazing dram which doesn’t taste like anything I’ve ever had before.”
Experience N.19 Thrice is Woven’s latest small batch blend and only 203 bottles are available. Thrice is bottled at 50.3% ABV and the ballot is open now.
The whisky is described as a ‘blended world whisky’, bringing together whisky from three different countries to create an entirely one of a kind drinking experience.
The first component is a Speyside blended malt whose constituent parts remain a mystery. This spirit brings all the hallmarks you would expect from whisky from this region, with notes such as green fruits coming through. This blend was also lightly peated, bringing a subtle smokiness to Thrice.
Moving to Ireland for the second ingredient, Woven chose a wheat-based grain whiskey from the Great Northern distillery. Making up approximately 24% of the blend, the grain whisky adds a creamy character to both the texture and the flavour.
Our final element is drawn from New Zealand’s Thomson distillery. This distillery is noted for using Manuka wood - a species of wood native to New Zealand and parts of Australia - that is burned when drying the barley, which in turn gives a unique perfumed, slightly sweet smokey character to the spirit.
Like all great blends, the constituent parts are good on their own but come together to create something greater than the some of its parts. Thrice is an excellent example of this and makes for a truly unique drinking experience.
In fact, the experience of drinking this blend also lends itself to this whisky’s name. As chief whisky maker Peter Allison explains, this whiskey truly comes together on the third sip.
With any whisky, the first taste will be an immediate slap of flavour, at times overwhelming. On your second sip you beginning to familiarise yourself with the layers and characteristics of the whisky. With Thrice, that third sip is crucial: all these contrasting elements begin to come together in balance and harmony.
We can’t help but agree. Having tried Experience N.19 we are delighted with how it turned out. It’s a fantastic drop and take our hats off to the team at Woven.
Don’t just take our word for it though; check out our video on YouTube where Pete guides us through the dram and industry legend Charlie MacLean gives his verdict.
