One of original superstars of the world whisky scene has been saved from bankruptcy, securing the jobs of the distillery team, and allowing barrel owners to breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Swedish single malt distillery Mackmyra announced in August 2024 that they were going into administration; news that shocked the whisky industry and brought into a sharp focus the financial challenges of running a distillery and whisky brand.
1st October 2024 will be a day that goes down in Mackmyra history however, as former board member Lennart Hero completed the acquisition along with No.1 Capital AB.
Mackmyra's official press release stated: “Our main goal with this deal is to retain as many of the skilled employees at Mackmyra as possible. We recognise and appreciate the enormous knowledge and passion of the staff, and we look forward to continuing to work with them to develop and strengthen the brand Mackmyra.
“Our vision is to lift Mackmyra to the next level. By adding both capital and strategic expertise we plan to further develop and refine the brand, with a continued strong anchoring in Swedish whisky tradition. Our goal is to make Mackmyra an even more prominent player on the global stage the whisky market.”
Certainly a noble and commendable statement, perhaps unsurprising with Mr Hero have said to have a deep connection and affinity with the distillery which was founded in 1999.
The entire whisky community will be hoping that the gamble pays off, and will be hoping for kinder economic conditions in the years ahead.
