The Friends of Laphroaig - one of the world’s most famous whisky fan clubs - can now count one of Hollywood’s top actors among its membership. But who is this mystery man?

Rugged yet refined. Charming and intriguing. Utterly distinctive, a true one-of-one.

Yes, this could arguably describe Laphroaig itself, but we’re actually talking about legendary actor Willem Dafoe. The iconic Islay distillery have partnered with the equally iconic actor to create a short film where Dafoe tries to put his finger on just what makes Laphroaig so… Laphroaig-y.

In the film we see Dafoe gleefully read through descriptions of Laphroaig while a mysterious conveyer belt brings these absurd images to life. Over the three minutes Dafoe declares his love for dirt and questions the merits of wrestling sailors. There’s also a lama called Honey, a massive wardrobe, and The Barley Man.

Honestly, words can’t do the ad justice, so check out the clip below!

Partnerships between celebrities and drinks brands can often feel a bit tired and uninspiring, but the collaboration between Dafoe and Laphroaig feels like a perfect fit. They’re both instantly recognisable and well-loved within their fields, and neither are afraid of embracing the quirky and unusual. They match each others freak, as the kids say.

Laphroaig’s website elaborates on their natural kinship while singing Dafoe’s praises: “As any film fan worth their peat will know, Willem is an iconic actor with a free spirit and an uncompromising dedication to his craft. Just like our single malt, Willem offers an unmatched intensity that’s seen him bring countless complex and unforgettable performances to life.

“A true visionary who always puts his commitment to craft first, Willem tackles every challenge with grit, passion, and the courage of his convictions. Distinctive, he’s a man after our own heart, and with so much in common, our Friendship comes only too naturally.

“Just like our Islay single malt, Willem leaves a lasting impression that’s always unforgettable.”

The team at also promise that this collaboration isn’t a one-off and that more content featuring Dafoe will follow in the future. Whether or not we’ll see a Willem Dafoe endorsed Laphroaig akin to the popular Lagavulin and Nick Offerman releases remains to be seen.

Laphroaig aren’t the only Scotch brand to rope in an A-lister to help promote their brand this year. Back in January, Glenmorangie launched their latest ad campaign starring Harrison Ford. While not as eccentric as the Laphroaig film, the Glenmorangie ads are still playful and tap into some of the quirks of Scotch whisky and wider Scottish culture.
